Visual Art

Lapis Bug paintingMy career as an exhibiting artist began in the early 1980’s. I worked with photography during that time, mostly large and medium format film and a variety of alternative printing techniques such as platinum, palladium, kallitype and gravure. I started painting and learning bookbinding in the early 1990’s and began exhibiting paintings and artist books later that decade.

The book format is an ideal one for my visual art. The combination of text, image, narrative, and ornamentation found in medieval books is a primary inspiration. There is also a significant parallel between making a manuscript book and making music, both allow for pacing, dynamics, orchestration, narrative, and ornamentation.

Due to the demands of my music, I have been producing a limited amount of visual art the last few years, although I hope to remedy that in the near future. I am always interested in commissions, and my work is represented in Portland by Butters Gallery.
